Diindolylmethane—the essence of the beneficial properties of cruciferous vegetables
DIM is a metabolite of substances found primarily in cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. This group of vegetables enjoys an exceptional reputation—they are credited with numerous health-promoting and preventive effects.
There is strong evidence that the beneficial properties of cruciferous vegetables are due, among other things, to indole-3-carbinol and the diindolylmethane (DIM) produced from it. The DIM supplement is typically used to influence estrogen metabolism.
According to research, DIM has the ability to modulate estrogen metabolism by altering their ratios. Different estrogens activate the ERα and ERβ receptors with varying potencies. Less activation of the former and greater activation of the latter has antiproliferative potential. Agents that can alter estrogen ratios in this way show significant health-promoting potential.
